One of the worst cyclones on record in the Southern Hemisphere hits the port city of Beira, about 90% damaged, then dumps torrential rain as far as Zimbabwe.

Human consequences

A cholera outbreak follows the disaster; about 3 million people are affected.

Environmental consequences

The floods form an “inland sea” more than 100 km long.

Economic consequences

Hundreds of thousands of hectares of crops destroyed just before the harvest.

Political consequences

A symbol of southern Africa’s vulnerability to climate change; Cyclone Kenneth hits Mozambique again six weeks later.
